Fila Brazillia A Touch Of Cloth Rar Rating: 8,2/10 3066 reviews

Another year brings yet another album from, just one of the consistently excellent acts on England's Pork Recordings label. A Touch of Cloth charts territory similar to the previous year's, namely the lighter side of '70s funk. From to 77 Sunset Strip, captures the decade with all the laid-back rhythms and groovy basslines listeners expect. Many tracks have killer hooks, and although the duo occasionally appears unsure of where to go with the songs, A Touch of Cloth is another solid album from the Pork family.

It's very good to see so many positive comments on this wonderful album. Fila's first album away from the excellent Pork Recordings is a mesmerising creation.

Fila

The fusion of styles (funk, jazz, ambient etc) is wonderfully realised and Fila have produced an album with a sound of its' own. As pointed out by nearly all the contributors below (ignore scoundrel's assertion that this album is uneven - UNEVEN?!).

Fila Brazillia

This album is a very coherent whole. As oblaky points out, this album is an single listening experience, with each track forming an integral part of the overall fabric.

There are of course moments that each listener will cherish especially keenly. For me the closing track Spores is simply stunning. A chillout masterpiece up there with the finest I can recall. Whenever the track comes on, I will totally defocus any distractions and just sit still spellbound by the melodic perfection of it.

Fila have always had a very strong ability to assemble a diverse range of influences into a new whole, but for me this album demonstrates that knack with more confidence and sureness of touch than their other excellent albums before or since. As others have said, this is a great starting point for those interested in FB, and for those already acquainted this represents a crowning glory of their excellent music. If someone forced me to pick a favourite FB album then it would be this one. The music here is delicately woven with the best sounding cotton and silk, interlaced with gilded woolly threads.

It forms an intricate and expensive medieval shroud with quirky patterns overhauled in electronic form. Rarely have I heard such complete and original set of tracks rolled into such layered, rich and complex album.

Touch

Fila Brazillia

Favourite tracks would be difficult to pick as they all create a single listening experience with amazing, uplifting and upbeat tracks (Track 1), moving further to various different emotional moments. If really forced, again, I would pick Slow Light and Snakeskin Bib for the exalted feeling they cause in me when I come back to them. As implied earlier, there is no weak moment here.

Fila stands strong, effortlessly flirting with your ears, hearts and minds. If you don't know or own this one, I envy you. As the first album for their own label, Tritone (which would later become Twentythree), A Touch of Cloth is classic Fila Brazillia: the first track, “The Bugs Will Bite,” goes all over the place, from funk to disco and back. “Airlock Holmes” and “Slow Light” return to mellow territory, while “Ridden Pony” has a subtle spy movie vibe to it before launching into a brass section. “Snakeskin Bib” goes for some light breaks; “XII” is a gentle guitar interlude; and “Spores” goes for sweet ambience.

Although the album as a whole is uneven, an uneven album by Fila Brazillia still stands head-and-shoulders above its competitors.
