There was, for many years, a company called Rutland in Southern California, that was kind of a mini- MSC or Enco kind of importer. They carried a complete line of machine shop supplies and tools. There used to be a lot of those companies, all over, before the internet. They were, eventually, bought by MSC. It is quite possible your lathe is a taiwan machine, imported by Rutland. The timing would be about right.

They were pretty big in the mid 80s. I keep old catalogs for reference and probably have a few Rutland catalogs from the 80's. If I can be assured this is not some POS 'mini lathe' I'll look into it. As it happens, I, too, have a shelf full of old catalogs. And I found a 1987 Rutland catalog. A 2649-1190 is a very ordinary taiwan 12x36 belt drive lathe. It cost $2550 new, and weighs 900lbs.

1hp, single phase. Its not quite a POS mini-lathe- more like a bottom of the line garage shop lathe. Jet, and various other big importers brought in similar, but not identical lathes at that time. There is no way of knowing which factory in taiwan it came from, and I would doubt any parts are available from anyone.

This was an era where anybody who bought a container full could have any name they wanted put on them, and could specify tapers, hp, and bearing grades. Its an orphan, and, if it works, use it. There never were really 'manuals' for lathes like this at that time- there might have been a ten page booklet that told the weight and hp, and told you where to oil it.

I would just buy a copy of how to run a lathe, the old south bend book. And, maybe you could download a manual of a similar lathe- but there just isnt much to this machine.
